Lecture: “Shew Yourselves to be Freemen” at Vance Birthplace

April 4, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Vance Birthplace and the Mountain History & Culture Group present will present our annual spring lecture on Saturday, April 4, 2020 from 1-3 pm. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Bruce Stewart, Associate Professor of History at Appalachian State University, as this year’s speaker. Dr. Stewart earned his M.A. in History from Western Carolina University and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia. His areas of study are United States History and Appalachian History. Dr. Stewart’s courses and publications emphasize issues within these fields, including his upcoming book, Redemption from Tyranny: Herman Husband’s American Revolution (Learn more: https://www.upress.virginia.edu/title/5188).

Dr. Stewart’s lecture, entitled “‘Shew Yourselves to Be Freemen’: Herman Husband and the North Carolina Regulation,” will utilize research from his upcoming book. A farmer, evangelical, and political activist, Herman Husband (1724-1795) played a crucial role in some of the most important anti-establishment movements in eighteenth-century America–the Great Awakening, the North Carolina Regulation, the American Revolution, and the Whiskey Rebellion. Husband became a famous radical, advocating for the reduction of economic inequality among white men.

This lecture is free and will be held at the Vance Birthplace. Light refreshments will be served.
